WSIB Health and Safety Excellence Program

The Ontario WSIB Health and Safety Excellence Program (HSEP)  that recognizes Employer’s and workplace efforts in safety. This program is the only rebate program offered by WSIB. The HSEP provides a clear road map for Ontario businesses to implement their health and safety program. 

Whether you are just getting started or want to optimize systems and processes you already have in place, the Excellence program can help you reach your goals.

Participants can earn both financial and non-financial rewards and create safer workplaces.

Key Features

  • To improve workplace health and safety and achieve recognition.
  • Employers can choose to work on 1 to 5 health and safety topics in a 365 days period.
  • Topics provide for customization to your business size and sector – make these topics work for you! Choose your level of entry and the topics which are relevant to you.
  • Registration is open all year and you can start whenever you want. ACSESS offers HSEP information sessions.
  • Financial and non-financial recognition is based on your firm’s individual success.
  • ACSESS offers the support, networking and competency building tools, and samples you need to succeed.
  • Attend our networking regular HSEP group meetings.
  • Need onsite support and one to one service – that is available as well – additional fees apply.

How the HSEP program works

  1. Attend an ACSESS info session to learn about the program and the journey health and safety of excellence.
  2. Join: Register with ACSESS (ACSESS is an approved provider), complete an assessment/questionnaire and select from 1-5 topics to work on.
  3. Develop: Learn and implement your selected safety topic(s) with the services and supports of ACSESS. 
  4. Demonstrate: Submit evidence of implementation for each topic for review by ACSESS and then a WSIB validator.
  5. Achieve: Receive rebates for all completed topics and non-financial recognition in the form of a badge.

Eligibility

  • Firms require an active WSIB account, in good standing.
  • Both Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 firms can participate; however, financial rebates are available for Schedule 1 firms only.
  • Participation requires the firm to register with an official WSIB program provider (ACSESS).
  • Firm must attend or view the online recording of the ACSESS HSEP information session.

Financial Rewards

Financial Rewards
  • The Health and Safety Excellence program helps you make your workplace safer, while earning rebates on your WSIB premiums.
  • The amount you earn in rebates is based on the number of topics you complete and your reported WSIB premiums for the previous year.
  • In addition, you will receive an extra $1,000 every time you create a new health and safety action plan.
  • You can complete up to five topics in each health and safety action plan.

*The maximum rebate per action plan regardless of the number of topics completed is 200 per cent or two times your previous year’s reported premiums.
 
Non-Financial Rewards
  • Change in your safety culture and improved safety performance. Structure and goals established for your safety program.
  • An HSEP program participation badge will be visible in the public WSIB safety check site when a firm’s action plan is approved.
  • Annually an achievement report will be sent to employers from the WSIB providing their progress in the program.
